THE MATUMBILAS move to Canada and beyond

If one is an alum of last month’s Kidscreen Summit in San Diego, one might know of stage whispers related to THE MATUMBILAS: in other words, news coming from the mouths of Creator-in-Attendance Zul Manzi and Animation Producer-Conference Delegate Jerry Brice, respectively. The reason for the chatter is that this beloved, former KweliTV adult cartoon — with Season 1 Executive Producer cred from Lil Rel Howery — is going places! Manzi and Brice’s recent San Diego sojourn underscores the franchise’s highlights.

Less than 2 years after unveiling the inaugural slate for its Calgary-based animation studio Missing Socks Entertainment, Titan1Studios announces a MATUMBILAS collaboration and an eye toward growing the brand in North America.

Stand-up comic Zul Manzi is the force behind this semi-autobiographical show that follows a quirky Tanzanian family and its growing pains during acclimation to an unfamiliar Hopeland, Massachusetts home. The series humorously explores the trials and tribulations of parents Hashim and Zainat (who try to uphold Tanzanian traditions), while their first-generation American children — Amina, Rajab, and Zulfiqar — construct their own cultural identities.
